A's at the plate: Bobby Crosby's two-run double in the third inning erased South Africa's 1-0 lead. Freddie Bynum had an infield single and a two-run triple; Andrew Beattie, Javier Herrera, Daric Barton and Matt Watson each had two hits; and Nick Swisher, who had three RBIs, hit a two-run homer in the sixth.

South Africa at the plate: Leadoff man Paul Bell doubled to open the game and scored on a groundout by Willem Kemp. Bell and third baseman Jon Phillips each had two hits.

A's on the mound: Starter Shane Komine gave up a run on one hit over two innings and was replaced by Dan Meyer, who worked two shutout innings.

South Africa on the mound: Starter Barry Armitage, a Double-A prospect in the Royals' organization, gave up a hit and a walk in his scoreless inning of work. Reliever Tyrone Lamont didn't allow a hit over 1 2/3 innings.

Cactus League records: A's 1-3; South Africa 0-1.

Up next: The A's host the Angels at 1:05 p.m. PT Sunday at Phoenix Municipal Stadium. Right-hander Kirk Saarloos will start for Oakland opposite Kevin Gregg. South Africa opens play in the World Baseball Classic on Tuesday against Canada.
