On Tuesday, Kirk Saarloos is scheduled to make his first start since Aug. 20 for the A's in the middle game of the three-game series against the Red Sox.
Saarloos has bounced in and out of the rotation this season after being the No. 5 man in 2005. He will make his 13th start of the season and third this month.
The right-hander started the season in the bullpen and is 3-0 with a 2.35 ERA over his past six games (four relief appearances). In his last two contests, against the Royals and Mariners, Saarloos yielded four runs over 12 innings.
The A's pitcher will be making his sixth start of the season on six or more days rest this season and he is 3-1 with a 4.00 ERA during those starts.
Saarloos is 1-0 in seven appearances against the Red Sox with a 3.71 ERA. The Red Sox will counter with Josh Beckett.
BOS: RHP Josh Beckett (14-8, 5.21 ERA)
OAK: RHP Kirk Saarloos (6-6, 4.66 ERA)
Saarloos scattered 11 hits in his last start against the Royals, but held Kansas City to two runs for his sixth win.
Beckett is coming off one of his best starts in some time, as he went six innings and gave up one run in a win over the Angels. He had to leave one batter into the seventh inning after developing a small cut on his right middle finger. The right-hander has had mixed results against Oakland this season, going 1-1 with an 8.71 ERA in two starts.
Player to watch
A's slugger Milton Bradley is 4-for-10 lifetime against Beckett with three RBIs and two doubles.
