Zito takes on Schilling in battle of aces

The fans at McAfee Coliseum will get a treat on Wednesday by getting to watch two aces go at it with Barry Zito vs. Curt Schilling.

Zito is coming off his 100th career victory, in which he took a no-hitter into the eighth inning. Schilling is one punchout away from strikeout No. 3,000.

The A's lefty has been up and down during August. In three starts, he has gone least seven innings with two or fewer earned runs given up. In two other starts, Zito gave up a combined 10 runs over 10 innings against the Rangers and Mariners.

Zito earned a win in his first start against Boston this season on July 14, but was hammered for seven runs and three homers over five innings on July 24 at Oakland.

Schilling is having his second straight sub-par month with the Red Sox, with a 1-2 record and 4.46 ERA. He has had three quality starts this month and 29 strikeouts, but the righty had two starts against the Royals and Mariners in which he gave up five runs each.

In two starts against the A's this year, Schilling is 2-0 while giving up four runs over 13 innings.
