Blanton called on against Red Sox

A's, Blanton hit the road for series in Boston

Joe Blanton must feel really comfortable on the mound at Fenway Park.

The Oakland right-hander has faired quite well in two career starts against the Red Sox, both coming in Boston.

His last outing against the Red Sox came in July of last season. Blanton went seven strong innings, allowing just five hits and only one run.

Before that, on Sept. 15, 2005, Blanton went 6 1/3 innings and allowed two earned runs.

"It's just a great atmosphere to play in," Blanton said of Fenway Park. "It's always a big game. You better bring your 'A' game, or you won't last long."

After giving up four earned runs in his first start of the season, Blanton hasn't allowed more than three runs in any of his five starts since. He pitched a complete game in his last outing, allowing two runs in a 2-0 loss to Seattle.

Blanton will be opposed by 40-year-old Curt Schilling. Schilling has been up and down so far in his five starts. Ten of the 12 earned runs he has allowed came in two starts, five against New York and five against Kansas City. In his starts against the Orioles, Rangers and Angels, he has allowed a combined two earned runs.

Schilling last faced Oakland on July 25 last season, allowing four earned in six innings at the Coliseum. 10 days before that, he faced the A's at Fenway, firing seven scoreless innings.
