Now it's not all too often a player is a tad disappointed with a base hit, but it's also not too often his first seven hits as a Major Leaguer are doubles -- as was the case for Gonzalez before the single off Ervin Santana on Sunday.Entering Sunday's series finale against the Angels, Gonzalez was the first player in Major League history to produce extra-base hits for each of his first seven big league hits since Johnny Mize did it for the St. Louis Cardinals in 1936.
OAK: LHP Dana Eveland (4-4, 3.82 ERA)
Eveland is coming off consecutive starts in which he lasted just 4 1/3 innings each time. In his previous start against Detroit, he allowed three runs on three hits and a career-high seven walks while throwing 85 pitches in a no-decision. Before allowing 10 runs in his past two starts, Eveland had surrendered just six runs over his first four starts in May. NYY: RHP Chien-Ming Wang (6-2, 4.57 ERA)
Wang has been struggling lately, going winless in his last six starts with a 6.45 ERA. Wang is 1-0 with a 1.42 ERA in two starts against Oakland, and the Yankees are hoping for similar results in the series opener, as pitching coach Dave Eiland continues to work with Wang on his recent mechanical problems. Dribblers
Outfielder Emil Brown was out of Sunday's lineup, with manager Bob Geren favoring Jack Cust in left field, Gonzalez in center and Travis Buck in right for the third consecutive game against the Angels. It was the first time Brown had gone back-to-back games without starting this year. ... Buck has started each of the A's nine games since being recalled from Triple-A Sacramento on May 30, which marks the first time in his career he has started more than seven consecutive games. ... With a single in the third inning Sunday, Bobby Crosby put a halt to his 0-for-14 hitless career against Santana. It was the most at-bats Crosby had against any pitcher without a hit. ... The A's clubhouse has lately given more TV time to the NCAA Super Regional college baseball games rather than Major League matchups. Before stretching on Sunday, A's players gathered around the big screen to catch a couple innings of Florida State battling Wichita State. Tickets
