OAKLAND -- A's designated hitter Jack Cust set a record he'd rather not have Friday night, striking out for the 187th time this season to break the American League mark. Cust tied the record of 186 strikeouts, previously set by Milwaukee's Rob Deer in 1987, in the second inning of Oakland's 2-0 victory over Seattle. The Mariners' Felix Hernandez struck out Cust a second time in the fourth inning for the record-setter. Philadelphia's Ryan Howard set the Major League single-season record last season with 199 strikeouts.
Cust, third in the Majors in strikeouts behind Howard (192) and Arizona's Mark Reynolds (192), also leads the AL with 101 walks. Only two players -- Jim Thome of Cleveland in 1999 and Jason Giambi of the New York Yankees in 2003 -- have led a league in strikeouts and walks since 1986.
