A’s agree to terms with RHP Bartolo Colón on one-year contract

The Oakland A’s agreed to terms with right-handed pitcher Bartolo Colón on a one-year contract for the 2013 season, the club announced today.

Colón was 10-9 with a 3.43 ERA in 24 starts with the A’s in 2012 when he was suspended for 50 games Aug. 22 after testing positive for Testosterone, a performance-enhancing substance in violation of Major League Baseball’s Joint Drug Prevention and Treatment Program.  He has five games remaining on the suspension.

Colón won 10 games for the ninth time in his career, but it was his first 10-win season since 2005.  His 3.43 ERA was the second lowest of his career and he averaged just 1.36 walks per nine innings, which was the lowest mark of his career.  The 39-year-old right-hander was 6-7 with a 4.22 ERA over his first 15 starts before going on the disabled list with a strained right oblique.  He was reinstated July 3 and went 4-2 with a 2.30 ERA over his final nine starts.  Colón is currently pitching for Aguilas in the Dominican Winter League and is 1-0 with a 2.89 ERA in two starts.

Colón has a career record of 171-122 with a 4.05 ERA in 381 games, including 375 starts, in 15 seasons with seven teams.  He ranks third in Major League history among Dominican-born pitchers in wins, strikeouts (1833), games started and innings pitched (2393.1).  Among pitchers active during the 2012 season, he ranks sixth in complete games (32), ninth in wins and 10th in strikeouts.
