SEATTLE -- Since Yoenis Cespedes' name draws more attention than any of his A's teammates, so do his strikeouts.

Cespedes entered Saturday's game in Seattle having fanned six times in his previous eight at-bats, with his strikeout total up to 30 spanning 89 at-bats this season.

That means he's striking out 33.7 percent of the time. Last year, he struck out at a 20.9 percent rate.

"It's probably him trying to do a little too much, and then there are times during the season where you don't see the ball as well as you normally would, and those sometimes end up in some strikeouts," manager Bob Melvin said. "Look, he's not the only one that's not swinging the bat well right now. You're just more aware of when he's not swinging the bat well than the group around him."

The A's scored just 20 runs while hitting .207 over the first eight games of the road trip, six of them losses. Only three of those runs were scored Friday night, though Melvin uncharacteristically stuck with the same lineup on Saturday.

"You can't just say you have stretches like this and hope to come out of it," Melvin said. "You have to do something to come out of it. We're still grinding on it."
