SEATTLE -- John Jaso was a late scratch from the A's lineup on Friday because of a left palm abrasion he suffered sliding Thursday in Texas.

With Jaso out, Derek Norris started at catcher, two days after taking a foul ball to his groin area, and went 0-for-3 with two strikeouts, lowering his season average to .189.

Jaso took part in batting practice Friday afternoon for all of one at-bat before heading for the trainers' room to have his hand wrapped. Still feeling game-ready, he took a few swings in the inside cages shortly before first pitch, then realized the pain was too great to play.

"He he was trying to loosen it up," manager Bob Melvin said, "and it was still pretty significant."

Jaso suffered the injury while sliding into second base during Thursday's afternoon game against the Rangers, using adrenaline to finish all nine innings.

He said Friday night his hand was still very sore and that he wasn't sure if he'd be back in the lineup Saturday, remarking, "We'll see how fast my body heals. I'm not Wolverine, but … "
