A's activate Sweeney, option Denorfia

A's activate Sweeney, option Denorfia

LOS ANGELES -- As expected, the A's activated outfielder Ryan Sweeney off the 15-day disabled list on Thursday, after the center fielder was forced out because of a sprained left knee.

To make room for Sweeney on the active roster, outfielder Chris Denorfia was optioned to Triple-A Sacramento.

Sweeney did not start in his first day back because of the unfavorable lefty-lefty matchup against Dodgers starter Randy Wolf.

"This guy is pretty tough on lefties this year," manager Bob Geren said. "[Sweeney] is eligible. ... Perfect world he'll go in late for defense, and we'll win."

Geren also said that he was not sure whether Sweeney will start Friday against the San Diego Padres. Scheduled to start for the Padres is another left-hander, Wade LeBlanc.

Before his stint on the DL, Sweeney was batting .246 with eight doubles, two home runs and 15 RBIs in 49 games.
