Oakland Selects RHP Sonny Gray from Triple-A Sacramento

|

OAKLAND, Calif. - The Oakland Athletics announced today that they have selected right-handed pitcher Sonny Gray from Triple-A Sacramento. In a corresponding roster move, infielder Adam Rosales was designated for assignment.

Gray, the A's first-round selection in the 2011 draft, will make his first career Major League start today in Toronto. He posted a 10-7 record and 3.42 ERA in 20 games, all starts, for the River Cats this season. He struck out 118 batters and allowed 117 hits in 118.1 innings of work in Triple-A, ranking among the Pacific Coast League leaders in wins (tied for second) and ERA (sixth).

This marks his second stint with Oakland this year, as he threw 4.0 scoreless innings in two relief appearances after being called up from Sacramento July 10. The 23-year-old former Vanderbilt star made his Major League debut July 10 at Pittsburgh, tossing 2.0 scoreless innings while striking out three. He also logged 2.0 scoreless innings and fanned three against the Angels July 19 before being optioned back to the team's Triple-A affiliate after that game.

Rosales, who has played parts of four seasons with Oakland (2010-13), has been designated for assignment three times in the past 11 days. He was originally designated for assignment by the A's July 31. Texas claimed him Aug. 2 but after seeing no playing time with the Rangers, he was again designated for assignment Monday.

The 30-year-old utility infielder has hit .191 (26 for 136) with five doubles, four home runs and eight RBI in 51 games during his three stints with the A's this season. He is a .220 career hitter, with 29 doubles, three triples, 19 home runs and 76 RBI in 302 Major League games. Rosales started his career with Cincinnati in 2008-09 before being traded to Oakland with outfielder WillyTaveras for infielder Aarons Miles and cash on Feb. 1, 2010.
