A's Acquire C Kurt Suzuki from Washington

The Oakland Athletics have acquired catcher Kurt Suzuki and cash considerations from the Washington Nationals for minor league right-hander Dakota Bacus, it was announced today. A corresponding 25-man roster move will be made later today when Suzuki reports to Baltimore.

Suzuki was batting .222 with three home runs and 25 RBI in 79 games with Washington. He had a .254 average, 57 home runs and 302 RBI in 703 games over six seasons with the A's before he was traded to the Nationals on Aug. 3, 2012 for minor league catcher David Freitas. Suzuki was drafted by the A's in the second round of the 2004 First-Year Player Draft and made his Major League debut in 2007. He reached double figures in home runs in three consecutive seasons from 2009-11 and led the A's in RBI in 2009 (88) and 2010 (71). His 669 games caught are second most in Oakland history to Terry Steinbach (1050).

Bacus was 9-5 with a 3.56 ERA in 26 games, 16 starts, with Single-A Beloit. His opponents had a .263 batting average, including .238 against right-handed hitters compared to .293 against left-handers. Bacus was drafted by the A's in the ninth round of the 2012 First-Year Player Draft.
