Reddick earns defensive honors for A's

OAKLAND -- Josh Reddick may have missed out on his second straight Gold Glove Award, but on Thursday, the outfielder was named the A's Wilson Defensive Player of the Year for a second time.

The awards, given to a player on each team and determined by a balance of scouting, basic fielding stats and advanced metrics, were introduced just last year.

Boston's Dustin Pedroia was crowned the top defensive player in the American League, while D-backs outfielder Gerardo Parra took home the National League honor. Arizona was also named the top defensive team in the NL, with the Royals and O's sharing that honor in the AL.

The 26-year-old Reddick made all 108 of his starts in right field this year, tying for third among AL outfielders in double plays (three) and ranking ninth in assists (nine).

The GIBBY trophy for Defensive Player of the Year will be awarded as part of the 2013 Greatness in Baseball Yearly Awards, which are based on voting by media, front-office personnel, MLB alumni and the Society for American Baseball Research, as well as fan balloting on MLB.com.

Through Sunday, Dec. 1, fans will be able to cast their ballots at MLB.com for the year's top defensive star, with no individual league affiliation.
