A's acquire Baltimore closer Johnson for infielder Weeks


OAKLAND, Calif. -- The Oakland A's have acquired Baltimore Orioles closer Jim Johnson in exchange for infielder Jemile Weeks and a player to be named later, it was announced by the club this evening. 

Johnson, 30, has saved a Major League-leading 101 games over the past two seasons. He was 3-8 with 50 saves in 59 opportunities and a 2.94 ERA in 2013. The 6-6, 240-pound righthander posted a 2-1 mark with a club-record 51 saves in 54 opportunities and a 2.49 ERA in 2012 for the Orioles, earning an American League All-Star selection and the AL Rolaids Relief Man Award. He led the majors in saves in both 2012 and 2013

Pitching parts of six seasons with Baltimore, Johnson owns a 18-26 record and 3.11 ERA. He garnered 122 saves in 150 opportunities. 

Weeks, the A's first-round selection in the 2008 First-Player Draft, batted .271 with 19 doubles, 10 triples, four home runs and 40 RBI in 130 games for Triple-A Sacramento last season and tied for the team lead in stolen bases with 17 in 19 attempts. A September call-up in 2013, the switch-hitting infielder hit .111 (1 for 9) in eight games with Oakland. He played parts of the past three seasons with the Major League club. His best season came as a rookie in 2011 when he batted .303 with 26 doubles, eight triples, two homers and 36 RBI while stealing 22 bases in 97 games.
