The A's on Friday claimed catcher Chris Gimenez off waivers from the Rays, with a corresponding 40-man roster move yet to be announced.
The 30-year-old Gimenez hit .224 with a .350 on-base percentage, three home runs and 22 RBIs in 95 games for Tampa Bay's Triple-A affiliate last season. He showed versatility, playing the outfield and corner infield positions, in addition to appearing in 56 games behind the plate.
Gimenez was among the Rays' September callups last season, hitting .333 in four games. He has appeared in 143 Major Leagues games for the Indians (2009-10), Mariners (2011) and Rays (2012-13).
