Corey Brown's return to the A's was short-lived, as the outfielder on Friday elected to become a free agent after the club outrighted him to Triple-A Sacramento. He had been designated for assignment on Jan. 22 when Oakland signed Eric O'Flaherty.

A first-round pick by the A's in the 2007 First-Year Player Draft, Brown was acquired from the Nationals in December in exchange for cash considerations. Brown had been with Washington since Oakland traded him to the Nats as part of the Josh Willingham deal following the 2010 season.

Brown spent the majority of the past three seasons with Triple-A Syracuse, including 107 games last season, during which he hit .254 with 19 home runs and 56 RBIs. He also logged 14 games with the big league club, going 2-for-12 with a home run in his brief stint following a September callup.
