The Oakland Athletics have claimed left-handed pitcher Joe Savery off waivers from the Philadelphia Phillies, the club announced today. To make room on the 40-man roster, the A's have moved left-handed pitcher Eric O'Flaherty to the 60-man disabled list.

Savery, 28, posted a 2-0 record and 3.15 ERA with two saves in 18 relief appearances for the Phillies last season, allowing 15 hits and a .205 opponents batting average in 20.0 innings. The Rice University product has pitched parts of the last three seasons on the big league level, registering a 3-2 mark and 4.15 ERA in 41 career games, striking out 32 and yielding 42 hits in 47.2 innings.

Philadelphia's first-round selection (19th overall) in the 2007 First-Year Draft, the 6-3, 235-pound southpaw owns a 37-33 record and 4.06 ERA in 157 minor league games. He was 3-1 with a 3.51 ERA in 22 games last season for Lehigh Valley, Clearwater and the Gulf Coast League Phillies.
