Rickey Henderson to throw out ceremonial first pitch on Opening Night


WHAT: Rickey Henderson, arguably the greatest leadoff hitter in Major League Baseball history and a member of the Baseball Hall of Fame, will throw out the ceremonial first pitch on Opening Night Monday, March 31.

Henderson, a 10-time All-Star and the 1990 AL Most Valuable Player, retired as MLB's all-time leader in runs (2,295), stolen bases (1,406) and walks (2,190). He also recorded 3,055 hits, 297 home runs and 1,115 RBI to go along with a .401 on-base percentage. Henderson set the ML single season stolen base record with 130 in 1982 and led the league in steals 12 times. His 81 home runs leading off a game remain a ML record.

Henderson was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2009 and had his number retired by the A's on August 1, 2009. He made his ML debut with Oakland in 1979 and had four stints with the A's (1979-84, 89-93, 94-95, 98). Henderson was a member of the A's World Series Championship team in 1989, which will celebrate its 25th anniversary with a special reunion on Saturday, July 19.
