A's Acquire OF/1B Kyle Blanks from San Diego

OAKLAND, Calif. - The Oakland A's acquired outfielder/first baseman Kyle Blanks from the San Diego Padres for minor league outfielder Jake Goebbert and a player to be named later, the club announced today. To clear a spot on the roster, the A's designated first baseman Daric Barton for assignment. Blanks will join the team in Cleveland tomorrow.

Blanks began the season at Triple-A El Paso and was batting .265 with nine home runs and 20 RBI in 27 games with the Chihuahuas when he was recalled by San Diego May 5. He was tied for second in the Pacific Coast League in home runs at the time of his promotion. The 27-year old right-handed hitter went 2-for-10 (.500) in five games with the Padres before he was optioned back to El Paso May 13. Blanks was originally selected by San Diego in the 42nd round of the 2004 draft and made his Major League debut with the Padres in 2009, batting .250 with 10 home runs and 22 RBI in 54 games. He spent parts of the last six season with San Diego and is a .228 career hitter with 28 home runs and 98 RBI in 239 games. Blanks has appeared in 122 games in left field, 64 at first base and 59 in right field.

Goebbert was batting .257 with six home runs and 25 RBI in 31 games with Triple-A Sacramento. He was acquired by the A's from Houston for Travis Blackley April 4, 2013 and is a .278 career hitter with 59 home runs and 343 RBI in 613 games in six seasons in the minors.

Barton was on the A's Opening Day roster and was batting .158 with five RBI in 30 games with Oakland. He has spent parts of the last eight seasons with Oakland is a .247 career hitter in 551 games.
