A's select 30 players on final day of First-Year Player Draft


OAKLAND, Calif. - The Oakland A's selected 30 players on the third and final day of the 2014 First-Year Player Draft, the club announced today. The A's chose college players with 22 of their 30 picks on Day 3, and selected a college player with 30 of their 40 picks overall. Throughout the complete 40 rounds of the draft, the A's chose 18 pitchers, four catchers, 11 infielders and seven outfielders.

The A's selected three Northern California products on Day 3 of the draft. In the 23rd round (702nd overall pick), Oakland drafted Santa Cruz native and St. Mary's junior Collin Ferguson, who led the Gaels in doubles (14) and RBI (27) in 2014. The 6-2, 216-pound left-handed hitting first baseman finished the season with a .256 average and three home runs while starting all 55 games for St. Mary's.

In the 31st round, Oakland chose right-handed pitcher Tyler Schimpf from Capital Christian High School in Sacramento, who is committed to the University of Texas. With their final pick, the A's drafted shortstop Bryson Brigman from San Jose's Valley Christian High School.

After beginning Day 3 by drafting 14 consecutive college players, the A's selected high school outfielder Joseph Estrada from Colegio Hector Urdaneta in Puerto Rico with their 25th round selection. They then drafted five straight college seniors before rounding out the draft by choosing high school players with seven of their final 10 picks.
